Quantifiers

1. Quantifiers are adjectives and adjectival phrases that give approximate or specific answers to the questions 'How much?' and 'How many?'

In simple words, we use quantifiers when we want to give someone information about the number of something: how much or how many.
'Some', 'many', 'a lot of' and 'a few' are examples of quantifiers.
E.g.
i) There aresomebooks on the desk.
ii) He's got onlya fewdollars.
iii) Howmuchmoney have you got?
iv) There isa large quantity offish in this river.
v) He's gotmorefriends than his sister.

2. Quantifiers can be used with both可数名词和不可数名词.

i) Countable Nouns (Count nouns):
'Countable nouns' have a singular and a plural form. In plural, these nouns can be used with a number - they can be counted. (That's why they are called 'countable nouns').
E.g. 1 friend, 2 friends, 3 friends...
1 book, 2 books, 3 books...

'Many' is a quantifier that is used with countable nouns.

ii) Uncountable nouns (non-count nouns):
Uncountable nounscan only be used in singular. These nouns cannot be used with a number - they can't be counted. (That's why they are called 'uncountable nouns').
E.g. a) I have a lot of money. (Not 1000money)
b) You say I drink a lot of milk. (Not 5milk)

Uncountable nouns take 'much'.
E.g. 'Much' money

Note: You can count money, milk, meat; but then, you would use: the currency, liter, kilo, glass; and say that you have got:
5 euros or dollars (but not 5money).
Uncountable nouns are measured with count frames like liter, kilos etc.
