Mixed Verbs, Continuous and Non Continuous

Continuous Verbs:
A tense, Past, Present or Future, formed with the auxiliary verb 'be' and 'a main verb in '-ing' form'. (E.g. he is speaking, they have been working)

Note:There are some verbs that we do not normally use with continuous (or progressive) tenses. Also, there are other verbs that have one meaning when expressed in noun continuous form and a different meaning with continuous tenses.
We will look into these, in this lesson.

Non Continuous Verbs:
Non-continuous verbs are verbs that we do not normally use in the continuous form. These \'stative\' verbs talk about 'state', not 'action' and they cannot express the continuous or progressive aspect. Verbs that cannot be used in continuous forms are usually verbs that you cannot 'see' somebody doing.

Here are some of the most common non-continuous verbs:
(1)Verbs of perception: E.g. see, hear, smell, notice, recognize.
(2)Verbs of appearing: E.g. appear, look, seem.
(3)Verbs of emotion: E.g. want, wish, desire, feel, like, love, hate, hope, refuse, prefer.
(4)Verbs of thinking: E.g. think, suppose, believe, agree, consider, trust, remember, forget, know, understand, imagine, mean, mind.
(5)Have(means to possess), own, possess, belong to, contain, consist of, be (except when used in the passive)

Notice that we often usecan + see/hear:
E.g. i) I can see someone in the distance. not I am seeing someone in the distance.
ii) I can't hear you very well. not I am not hearing you very well.

1) Verbs with different meanings
Some verbs have both the continuous and the non-continuous forms; however they convey different meanings when used in these two forms. These are calledMixed verbs.

Here is a list of verbs that have different meanings when used in the continuous forms/tenses;
i) to appear:
E.g.
i) Sarahappearsconfused. (Non-Continuous Verb)
Sarah seems confused
ii) My favourite singeris appearingat the jazz club tonight. (Normal Verb)
My favourite singer is giving a performance at the jazz club tonight.

ii)to have:
E.g.
i) Ihavea pound now. (Non-Continuous Verb)
I possess a pound.
ii) I am having fun now. (Normal Verb)
I am experiencing fun now.

iii)to hear:
E.g.
i) She hears the music. (Non-Continuous Verb)
Shehearsthe music with her ears.
ii) Sheis hearingvoices. (Normal Verb)
She hears something others cannot hear. She is hearing voices in her mind.

iv)to look:
E.g.
i) Tesslookstired. (Non-Continuous Verb)
She seems tired.

She is looking with her eyes.

v) to miss:
E.g.

vi) to see:

vii)to smell:
E.g.

The coffee has a good smell.
ii) Iam smellingthe flowers. (Normal Verb)
I am sniffing the flowers to see what their smell is like.

viii)to taste:
E.g.
i) The coffeetastesgood. (Non-Continuous Verb)
The coffee has a good taste.
ii) Iam tastingthe wine. (Normal Verb)
I am trying the wine to see what it tastes like.

ix)想:
E.g.
i) Hethinksthe test is easy. (Non-Continuous Verb)
He considers the test to be easy.
ii) Sheis thinkingabout the question. (Normal Verb)
She is pondering the question, going over it in her mind.

2) The to-be verb:
E.g.
i) Mattis中国人(非连续动词)
Matt is a citizen of China.
ii) Mattis beingvery Chinese. (Normal Verb)
Matt is behaving like a stereotypical Chinese.
iii) Mattis beingvery rude. (Normal Verb)
Matt is behaving very rudely. Usually he is not rude.

\'To be\' is rarely used in the continuous form. This is most commonly done when a person is temporarily behaving badly or stereotypically. It can also be used when someone's behaviour is noticeably different.
